The Importance of Prioritizing Yourself
In this world, if you do not care for yourself, others are less likely to care for you. I believe this to be true in most cases.
Think about it—if you have an item that you love, that looks good, and that others appreciate, it holds value. But if you don’t love it, and nobody else values it, its worth diminishes—at least in your eyes.
Value is highly subjective, not objective. Something may be worth $100 in one place but only $10 in another, depending on the environment and the people around it. The same is true for self-worth: if you don’t prioritize yourself, others may see you as less valuable.
That’s why it’s crucial to take care of yourself—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Eating well, loving yourself, fostering inner peace, and nurturing your relationship with God all contribute to a strong foundation of self-worth.
Surrounding yourself with like-minded people who strive for growth is also essential. Those who seek to grow naturally gravitate toward others who share that mindset.
I’m not materialistic, but I recognize that in this world, people often judge based on what they see. Visual appeal influences how people connect with and perceive things. When you go to a store and select an item, you use your eyes to determine whether it’s something you want.
However, true value is not just in the eye of the beholder—it also lies in the heart of the beholder.
When you value yourself, it becomes easier to find others who value you. And once you truly recognize your own worth, you’ll naturally attract people who also value themselves. In a way, this increases your own value, because worth is largely determined by the company you keep.
Consider a chocolate bar: in one store, it may cost $1, in another, $3, and in a luxury store, $5. The environment—the "store"—determines how people perceive its worth. If that same chocolate bar is placed in a discount bin, people may not desire it as much.
The same principle applies to you. You must place yourself in an environment that recognizes your worth, where people uplift and encourage you to be your best.
At the end of the day, your self-worth starts with you. Others do not define your value—you do. And once you establish your worth, you get to decide the "store" you belong in.
So take care of yourself, invest in your growth, and choose wisely where you place yourself. Your value is yours to define.
